Bill Clinton to Speak at Transylvania Tomorrow
By Kyle | May 16, 2008
Students just found out that Bill Clinton will speak at the Beck Center at 4pm on Saturday. Apparently Hillary Clinton asked to speak on Monday but the President of the University has claimed that we need to prepare for graduation. Some speculate that his conservative bias is really what is keeping her from speaking.
Update: Someone sent me this Clinton joke. It is funny, but a little long to post here.

This is without a doubt the coolest graffiti ever. It shows evolution from a single cell to where we are today as well as where the artist sees us going in the future.

Spring Computer Cleaning in 5 Easy Steps
By Kyle | May 16, 2008
A lot of people’s computers get significantly slower after they have owned them for a long time. By that same token, a lot of people ask me how they can “make it go faster.” There are a lot of answers that question, but by far the simplest is to give it a solid cleaning. These four simple steps are meant for the less technologically inclined and I have tried to make them as clear as possible. This would be a good post to send to inept parents or grandparents. Unfortunately this only helps if you have a PC.
Step 1: Remove Spyware
Ad-Aware is a great program made by LavaSoft. You can download a free version by clicking here. The free version doesn’t have real time spyware detection, but it has the ability to scan your computer for existing problems and then remove them. Make sure you update the program for all spyware definitions and then run a full system scan, you will be shocked at how much you find.
Step 2: Remove Viruses
AVG is a free virus protection program. You can download a free version by clicking here. Again, the free version won’t do nearly as much as the costly one does, but for this purpose it will do enough. Update the virus definitions and then do a full system scan. Hopefully it won’t come with as many issues as the spyware scan did.
Step 3: Remove Unnecessary Files
SpacreMonger is a really cool program that scans your hard drive and then shows you through a graphical representation what files are taking up a lot of your hard drive capacity. You can download a free version by clicking here. I would recommend only deleting thing that you know what they do. Don’t delete anything within the Program Files folder. Often you will find media files you downloaded and then forgot about which are taking up a ton of space.
Step 4: Remove Unnecessary Applications
Go to Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs. Each program will list the last time it has been used (this is not always accurate). If you don’t use a program anymore, get rid of it. Many of the programs are launch when you start your computer and run in the background using precious resources that could be put elsewhere.
Step 5: Re-sort Hard Drive
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Click on a drive and then click Analyze at the bottom. Unless you do this fairly often, the program will most likely suggest that you defrag your hard drive. Don’t worry about what this actually does, because the program does everything for you. Just know that it will really increase the speed of your computer by optimizing how data is accessed from your hard drive.
Good luck with your cleaning!

How to Rip YouTube Videos in 4 Easy Steps
By Kyle | May 15, 2008
I have had numerous people ask me how they are supposed to download YouTube videos. Notably a friend asked me to rip something for a class last semester which made me actually take the time to figure out how exactly it was done. I knew in theory, but had never actually done it. Luckily it is surprisingly easy.
Step 1: Pick your Video
This not only works for YouTube, but also for Google Videos, Metacafe, DailyMotion and a few others. Load the video and then copy the url from your address bar.
Step 2: Go to www.keepvid.com
Paste the url (the one you copied in step 1) into the greenbox and then select the from the drop down menu where it came from.
Step 3: Downloading
Some download options will load on the page on keepvid.com. You need to right click on .flv or .mp4 and then in the dialog box that loads, add the appropriate extension.
Step 4: Conversion
Depending on what you need the file for, you will probably have to convert it to another format. By far the best application is Total Video Converter. It comes with directions that make it very simple.
I made some notes to post this a long time ago and figured I ought to finally get around to doing it. This is especially good to know if one of your friends posts an embarrassing video you think they might later take down.
