Inception in Real-Time

If you haven’t seen the movie yet (how is that even possible?) you should avoid this. It spoils everything.

The dvd for Inception comes out soon and as a result there has been a ton of press about the film. Christopher Nolan gave an interview to Wired about the film. In the interview they ask him about all of the internet theories (like this one I wrote) and he responds to some, but overall remains pretty vague.

The video below is a really cool idea, but could have been executed a little better. There is not a proportional amount of footage for everything to quite match up like it should.

The Bechdel Test

Found this via slashfilm.

I had never heard of this before, but I find it really interesting.

In the in 1985 Dykes to Watch Out For comic strip entitled “The Rule”, one of the characters claims that she only watches a movie if it satisfies the following requirements:

1. It has to have at least two women in it,
2. Who talk to each other,
3. About something besides a man.

How many movies do you think pass this simple test? The video explains.

If you see one movie this summer, “Exit Through the Gift Shop” should be it!

This will probably be the last non-Japan related post for a while.

About a week ago I got to see a sneak peek of “Exit Through The Gift Shop.” It’s a documentary about the elusive street artist Banksy. To explain what the movie is about, or to even show the trailer would run the risk of ruining this incredible film. This is a movie I would recommend to anyone and everyone. I enjoyed it more than Kick-Ass, Iron Man 2, or anything else I’ve seen in 2010. Do yourself a favor and go check this one out. Here is a list of cities where it is currently playing.

I guarantee this will become a cult film, it made big waves and Sundance and will probably at least be in the conversation come awards season. The moment I get back from Japan I’ll be headed to a theater to see it again. It’s so great and so profound, definitely check it out.

Weekend Reading: Avatar Edition

Don’t read any of these until you see the movie. They all contain minor spoilers.

Go See Avatar

It will be interesting to see how well Avatar does at the box office. Titanic is the highest grossing film of all time when you add in international earnings. Need a reason to see Avatar? According to SlashFilm, Steven Spielberg had this to say after seeing it for the first time:

The last time I came out of a movie feeling that way it was the first time I saw Star Wars.
- Steven Spielberg

The chart below show U.S. box office receipts.

Receipt from The Hangover

Someone went through the recent film The Hangover and added up all of the expenses they would have incurred over the course of the film.

Update: I moved the image to after the jump, it was way too large.

50 Greatest Movie Trailers of All Time

Check out the full list here. I can only remember seeing three of the top 25 on tv, most of them are really old. It seems like a lot shouldn’t belong on the list.

10 Most Anticipated Films of 2009

This is my Top 10, in the order of least anticipated to most anticipated.

10. FanboysRelease Date – February 5 – The only reason this one is coming in at the ten spot is that the movie comes out tomorrow. Otherwise it would definitely be further down the list. Trailer

9. G.I. Joe: Rise of CobraRelease Date – August 8 – The teaser shown during the Super Bowl got me excited. After seeing Transformers last year, I’m hoping that another part of my childhood can turn into a good movie. Trailer

Five Reasons to get Excited for Watchmen

Recently the trailer for the much anticipated Watchmen film was released in conjunction with The Dark Knight. It went unnoticed by a lot of people who couldn’t wait for the feature to begin. To change that I made this simple list about why you should get very excited about the Watchmen film. For those who have no idea what it is about, briefly it is a superhero story that takes place in the mid 80′s in an alternative history where the country is on the brink of war with the Soviets. Superheros exist, but are deeply flawed characters. The story begins with one of their own being murdered and follows the heros looking for answers.

1. The Watchmen book is Highly Rated
The original book is the only graphic novel to win the Hugo Award and the only graphic novel to make Time’s list of “the 100 best English-language novels.” That means critics regard it better than 300 and Sin City.

2. IMAX
Christopher Nolan shot scenes of The Dark Knight specifically for IMAX. Zach Snyder is doing the same thing and then some. More and more movies are being made to look great on IMAX and this is one will be ground breaking in the regard.

3. This is the Anti-Hero Movie
This summer has already seen Hulk, Batman and Iron Man and next summer has many more in store for us. We are going to need a break and luckily Watchmen is different. All of the superheros are regular people except for one and it explores their struggles with problems all people face. It is as dark as Sin City and as cinematic as 300.

4. Zach Snyder
Watchmen is being directed by Zach Snyder who also made 300 and Dawn of the Dead. Enough said.

5. The Trailer is Beautiful
You can check it out here.
