Go See The Dark Knight   20 comments

If you haven’t seen The Dark Knight yet, what are you waiting for? It is the best movie I have seen in a long time.

There have been reports coming in all weekend about how it first had to have midnight screenings extended all the way up until 6am to meet demand. Now it has broken the all time opening weekend box office record. If that isn’t enough to make you go see it, there have been reports that IMAX tickets are hitting Ebay and selling for as much as $300. Reviews have been so good, it is currently the #1 movie of all time on IMDB.

If you are going to see the film and want to get yourself into the experience I suggest reading into some of this background material.

Gotham Tonight - These videos are supplemental material that should be watched before you see the movie. They explain what has happened in between the first and second films.
Christopher Nolan Interview - Get inside the head of the director. I would predict there will be some golden statues coming this guys way in the future.
Dark Knight Marketing - One of the biggest parts of the film was the incredible marketing campaign, this link explains what lengths they went to in order to make sure everyone knew about the film.
History of the Joker - If you weren’t aware of all of the stories about where the Joker came from, you’ll find this one interesting.

(spoilers in the links below)
Finally, for those of you who have already seen the film there are a few things you need to check out to get the total Batman experience. First this comment thread of initial reactions to the film will help you find words to express how good it was. Second, this poll also does the same thing. Finally, this lengthy post deconstructs some of the major themes of the film.

Update: I started thinking, who would be the villain(s) in the third film. After reading the Wikipedia entry on all the possibilities, I gave up thinking about it.

  1. Well we know that 2 face was never declared dead, just Harvey Dent. My guess is two face will be back as the main bad guy as Nolan has said in the past the trilogy as it stands his the story of Dent. Harley Quinn could replace the joker as a minor side attraction. I think it would be nice to see the Mad Hatter or perhaps the Ventriloquist adding to those crazy criminals.

  2. They had a memorial service for Dent at the end of the movie. I took that as meaning he is dead, but I guess your reasoning could work.

  3. I don’t know what that Hamby guy is talking about. Not only is Dent most certainly dead, but those other villains he mentions are really fucking lame.

  5. I would love, this would be the best, to see the Ice Man as depicted in the Animated Series to come in the picture.

I bet you we have not seen the end of 2 face. he is the BIGGEST enemy in the series.

  7. barring a soap opera-esque resurrection I don’t see how two face will be back in the third movie. I think they stand better believability recasting the Joker (at least we know he’s not dead - remember, lord knows how many times the Joker escaped from jail in the Animated Series) than to dream up some excuse how, despite seeing him lifeless on the ground, and despite his funeral and eulogy, Harvey Dent/Two Face is actually still alive

  8. Has anyone seen any educated arguments for possible villain(s) in the third film? Possibly done by a credible source.

  9. two things make me firmly believe 2 face is still alive. On watching the movie the second time i noticed these things.

1] The coin which the camera is focused on falls on the “live” non darkened side which leads me to believe he is still alive. 2 face plays such a HUGE role in batman lore bigger than the Joker to a degree as 2 face was a former friend of wayne/batman before his decent to crime.

2] The conversation batman and gordon have is to place dent as a hero to allow the “white knight” to give hope to gotham. Dent is dead as a personality and 2 face lives. Gordon can not let them know what happened or else all that was fought for would be lost.

  10. 1. I think you missed the entire point of the film.

    2. Even if Dent is somehow still alive who in Gotham would not recognize his face that hasn’t been fucked up.

  11. The Joker’s wikipedia article is longer than Two-Face’s wikipedia article, thus he is a bigger part of the Batman universe.

  12. I don’t remember a casket with Dent in it, just a ceremony. Batman took off, and Gordon went to meet the police. Who’s watching Two-Face? Sure it would take some explaining in the next movie, but at its core, this is still a comic book movie - no one is ever really dead. Except Heath. Unfortunately after that performance.

Here’s my vote for Will Arnett as the Riddler or Philip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin.

  14. at least applegate can see the possibility. I only said 2 face places a bigger role to a degree as in the personal level because batman knows first hand 2 faces background but as multiple sources as well as TDK have shown we know nothing of the jokers past as everything changes and nothing can be believed.
I think applegate pointed this out after the movie when Morgan Freeman says the armor “does well against cats.” Michelle Pfeiffer part 2 here we come…

  15. I agree with Will Arnett as the Riddler and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin, that would be awesome.

  16. The only thing I must say is, “Watch as I make this pencil disappear!”

That movie was epic and I would say it surpasses IronMan.

  17. It seems this thread won’t die. Here is an article that supports Hamby’s thoughts with some additional evidence.
